Italeri ACH-47A “Armed Chinook”

Designed in the early 60s, Boeing’s Chinook is still in service today.  Italeri is producing various Chinook versions in 1/48:

  • the ACH-47A “Armed Chinook” (Italeri 2647),
  • the Chinook HC.1 (CH-47C) (Italeri 2662), and
  • the CH-47D (Italeri 2672).

Today’s review is for the ACH-47A (#2647).  I will post reviews for the other Italeri kits in the near future.

This kit comes in a very large box.  All parts are carefully wrapped.  The first impression when opening the box is a good one.  You can find various reviews of this kit, including one on kitreview.com.

I like the details on this kit.  The fuselage panel lines are well defined (and I think it is easy to overshadow them – but then finishing and weathering are a matter of personal taste!).  Details in the cargo area are good with no pin marks (unlike Academy’s CH-46 series).

The kit includes the armament specific to this version (20 mm cannons, 30 cal. guns, rockets, grenade launcher, etc.).  Decals are provided for 3 machines.  The only challenge I have experienced with this kit was finding enough room on my library shelves!!!

As for aftermarket, Eduard produces various sets of detailed PE for this kit, including the interior set pictured here (you can pick and choose according to your taste and budget).  I also believe a vendor is producing decals for this version.

For those interested in what the end-result may look like, an example of the finished kit is displayed at Scale Rotors.

One final note: during the preparation of this blog entry, I ran across a site dedicated to the Chinook.  This site is located at http://www.chinook-helicopter.com/ and features detailed information about the aircraft and many pictures including for the ACH-47A.

Kit Summary:

  • Italeri 2647
  • Scale: 1/48
  • Availability: Excellent
  • Status: In Production
  • Estimated Street Price: $65.00
