In previous blog entries, we introduced the Sikorsky CH-53 Sea Stallion. In 1/48th, Revell previously produced a CH-53G, and a HH-53C. These two kits depicted earlier CH-53 versions (two engines). Academy produces a couple of kits depicting the most recent versions in the CH-53 series with three engines and other very significant external differences. The Academy kits are therefore not the ones to pick if you plan to depict a MH-53J (Pave Low) using for example Cobra Company’s conversion set.
OK back to Academy’s Super Stallion… Academy produces a CH-53E Super Stallion “U.S. Marines Version” (academy 12209, see pictures below) and a MH-53E Sea Dragon (Academy 12703, see future blog entry).
I have not had a chance to put this kit together (yet). The engraving is very well done. A noteworthy aspect of this kit is that it provides for depicting the helicopter with main rotor and tail folded. Decals are provided for three U.S. Marines machines.
